10 P90X tips to get you started on the right foot

I will often get asked by people if I have any tips on doing P90X to help get good results with P90X.  For a long time I did not know how to respond to this question, so I really started to think about what P90X tips or advice I might give someone who was just starting P90X and I found myself thinking of things I wish someone would have told me before I started P90X the first time.  So the P90X tips that I offer here are all P90X tips that I have learned from my personal experiences.   I hope that you find these tips for completing P90X helpful in your fitness journey.

Tip 1 View the How to Bring It DVD

Many people think that completing P90X it is all about physically being able to complete the program, but in reality that is only a small part of the equation.  I know a lot of people who have “started” P90X but did not “finish” because the did not mentally commit to P90X.  So the first of my P90X tips is to watch the How to Bring It DVD.  In this is  great informational DVD Tony Horton himself  gives you P90X tips and even answers questions that you have not asked yet!  This will help you develop the proper mindset to complete P90X.

Tip 2 Study the P90X Fitness Guide

This is another great resource to give you even more P90X tips to help prepare you for what lies ahead in P90X.  It will continue to answer some frequently asked questions.  The fitness guide will also prepare you for how to go about life after you have completed P90X!

Tip 3 Study the Nutrition Guide

Tony Horton has made it very clear that working out is only half the equation, the other is diet and nutrition.  The people who have the best results with P90X are those who also follow the nutrition guide.  One of the best P90X tips I can give is to study and familiarize yourself with this guide.  This guide will teach you how to eat healthy by giving you food options and recipes, but it will also teach you when to eat what to maximize your workouts and fuel your body!

Tip 4 Take the Fit Test and Your Measurements

As an educator, I understand the importance of gaining a baseline when collecting data.  The same is true with fitness, a good baseline is needed to see gains.  The Fit Test will provide you with just that, a baseline to compare your progress against.  Equally important is to take your measurements. So the 4th of my P90X tips is to take the fit test and your measurements.  This may be painful emotionally to do, but trust me you will be glad you did once you have completed your 90 days of P90X!  It is important to take accurate measurements to ensure you can track your progress, so be sure to read this post on how to take body measurements.  If you need a body fat tester you can get one HERE.

Tip 5 Take Your BEFORE Photos

This is another one of the P90X tips that can be very hard emotionally for some people.  I know one the reasons why I decided to start P90X was because I did not like what I saw in the mirror.  So taking pictures of myself with my shirt off was the last thing I wanted to do.  Again, with the previous two P90X tips this acts as a great baseline for you in your fitness journey.  Looking back at my first before photos is incredibly motivating for me to stay healthy!  Again, it is very important that this be done correctly, so read this post on how to photograph your transformation.

Tip 6 Choose the Best P90X Schedule for You

In the P90X Fitness Guide you will find three different schedules:  clean, lean, and doubles.  So the 6th of my P90X tips is to find the right schedule for you.  Depending on your goals, abilities and time will factor into which schedule will work best for you.  The classic schedule is a well rounded fitness program equally focusing on cardiovascular training and strength training.  If you are wanting to improve your overall fitness this may be the best schedule for you.  The lean schedule includes both cardiovascular and strength training, but puts an emphasis on the cardiovascular training.  If you are wanting to focus on shredding fat, losing weight and improving your cardiovascular strength this may be the best schedule for you.  If you are already in good physical shape and a little bit crazy, the the doubles schedule may be best for you.  So again, the 6th of my P90X tips is to choose the best P90X Schedule for you.  Printable versions of all of these schedule can be found here.

Tip 7 Workout With Someone

Something that I am reminded of time and time again is the difference that working out with somebody else can make.  Whenever  I workout with someone else I am amazed yet again how hard I can push myself.  So the 7th of my P90X tips is to find yourself a friend or group to workout out with.  If you cannot find someone to workout with, then don’t worry, Team Beachbody has provided the perfect place to connect with like minded people.  Just find a buddy in the TEAM BEACHBODY COMMUNITY and invite them to workout with you in the WOWY SuperGym.  Whether you are being held accountable by someone in person or via the Internet, it does not matter, all that matters is that you have an accountability partner.

Tip 8 Do Not Try and Be a Superhero the First Week

When I first started P90X I had a lot of friends (who had already completed P90X) gave me a lot of P90X tips, one of the most common ones was to take it easy the first week.  Did I listen to them, no, do I regret it, yes.  What you need to remember is that the “X” in P90X stands for extreme!  Also remember that this is a 90 day program, it is not a sprint.  Do not get too focused on the number of repetitions you do or the amount of weight you are lifting.  Focus on learning the moves and getting your form down.  Also, do not get caught up on trying to keep up with the people on the DVDs, most people cannot keep up with them the first week, but by the end you should be able to hang with them.  Know that you will be sore and it will suck, but remember why you are doing P90X.  The soreness will decrease as you progress through the 90 days, but remember that things that are worth doing are not always easy!

Tip 9 Embrace Yoga

If there is a complaint I here about P90X it would be about Yoga X.  I know when I first started doing P90X I hated it, but I think that is because I had never done any sort of yoga before.  I soon started to embrace yoga and now it is one of my favorite things to do!  So one of the most important of the P90X tips would be to fight through yoga an embrace it!  I also want to warn you up front that Yoga X is 90  minutes long.  If time is an issue or you would like some variety you are in luck!  Tony Horton has done several other yoga DVDs that are less than 90 minutes long and just as good and challenging.  If you would like to find out more about these, read my article on alternatives to Yoga X.

Tip 10 Be Intentional About Your Nutrition

The final and possibly most important of my P90X tips is to be intentional about your nutrition.  This P90X tips is got many levels to it.  Whenever anybody is going to be doing a workout routine that has them working out intensely for 6 days a week it is crucial for them to fuel their body!  I would say that most of us do not have a problem getting enough lean protein in our diet, but I know a lot of people are like me and struggle to get enough “color” in our diet; we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables.  What I have done is added SHAKEOLOGY into my daily nutrition.  Shakeology does a tremendous job of filling in the “gaps” of my diet.  It is loaded with: “protein and essential amino acids help build muscles and reduce food cravings, prebiotics and digestive enzymes aid in improving digestion, regularity, and nutrient absorption, antioxidants and phytonutrients help counteract free radical damage that can lead to degenerative diseases, a daily dose of vitamins and minerals provides your body what it needs to function for optimal health.  It is truly “The Healthiest Meal of the Day” and I eat mine for desert!  Another of my P90X tips is to consider Shakeology.  So if you want more info on Shakeology just click here.  It is just as important to supplement your workouts with a high quality pre and post workout supplement.  My favorite pre-workout supplement is E & E Energy and Endurance pre-workout formula.  For my post workout supplementation, I have found P90X Results and Recovery Formula to not only work the best, but also taste the best!  So the last of my P90X tips find a pre and post workout supplement.
